The inaugural Melanesian Cup featuring Papua New Guinea’s Intercity Cup champions, the Agmark Gurias, and Fiji’s Vodafone Cup winner’s, Sabeto Roosters, will take place this weekend in Port Moresby.
Steven Nightingale, in his first term as head coach of the Gurias, has successfully secured his first premiership title and will be looking to cement his status as the nation’s top man in charge.
For this weekend’s clash, he’s recalled the service of Kumuls Captain, Albert Patak, along with the experience of Travis Waninara, Pidi Tongap, Jason Massian, Watson Boas and Chris Jerry.
Their experience will assist in guiding youngsters in the likes of Joe Tabutabu Jr, Lance Kuveu and Samuel Hamari both in the backline and in the forward pack.
The clash is an initiative to create a pathway for much of our rugby league players playing in the respective Intercity Cup and Fiji’s Vodafone Cup semi-professional competitions.
Tickets to the match will be sold at all Stop & Shop outlets in Port Moresby. K50 will get you to the main grandstand, while the outer stand is K25 per person.
A win by either side will set a benchmark for rugby league’s growth across both countries.
