Papua New Guinea’s United Nations Resident Coordinator, Roy Trivedy, says UNDP will continue its awareness campaign on disaster risk reduction measures in the country.

Mr Trivedy says while the country is celebration the nation’s 40th Anniversary of national sovereignty, some communities are affected by the effects of El Nino.

“As we celebrate independence this week, we also think of those people who are affected by the effects of drought in parts of our country,” Mr. Trivedy said.

As part of UNDP’s goal to increase community’s access to vital environmental information, it has conducted disaster risk reduction exercises in selected communities in PNG.

The effects of El Nino has affected parts of the country since August this year.

The National Weather Service predicts it will continue into the first four months of 2016.

While congratulating PNG on its 40th independence anniversary, the UN Resident Coordinator reflected on the areas of improvements that UN can work in collaboration with the national government to achieve in the coming years.

“This is an exciting time for PNG, it has managed to keep its democratic governance for over 40 years,” Mr. Trivedy said.

These areas include PNG’s democratic governance, gender equality and disaster risk management.

Since establishing a UN office in PNG, the organisation has to assist PNG with creating policies and providing technical support in rural communities on measures to manage disasters.
