Police Dog Unit Suspended

by Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Bomana Dog Unit have suspended operations since last Saturday, indefinitely.

It was a decision made by Police hierarchy, after a domestic violence case escalated into a fist fight between members of the dog unit and the Training College.

When EMTV visited Bomana Dog Unit this morning, gates were locked, offices closed, vehicles grounded, and no one turned up for work.

It all started from a domestic violence case between a police officer, who is a member of the Dog Unit, and his wife, who is an officer attached to the Bomana Training College.

The two units got involved when the new recruits intervened to prevent the husband from beating the wife, and in the process the husband was wounded and taken to hospital.

This saw members of the dog unit retaliate.

Last Friday, there was another confrontation that led to the assault of two police officers, and the destruction of police equipment at the guard house.

This prompted top management to suspend the dog unit.

Following the suspension, 10 members from dog unit (who reside in the college) have moved into their headquarters concerned for their safety.

Despite being suspended from work, and not allowed to enter work premises, they went ahead to feed, groom and exercise the police dogs to make sure they remain in good condition.
