Death penalty the ultimate choice, says Kua

Minister for Justice and Attorney General, Kerenga Kua says he is adamantthe death penalty against murders and rapists will be imposed under his watch.

Mr. Kua said at a news conference that innocent people andthe image ofthe country have suffered enough from criminal elements.

The  killing of young mther in relation to sorcery in Mt Hagen,the very recent raping and killing of a woman in Lae, andthe attack and rape of an American Scientist in Madang have grippedthe country. Womenand girls don’t feel safe anymore.

Women NGOs and concerned citizens inthe country have condemnedthe acts and have demanded tougher penalties to be imposed bythe government.

The Attorney General also expressed shock atthe current trend of aggravated violence against women.

Asthe new governmentoMr Kua assures thatthere will be tough penalties -the death penaltythe ultimate.

Kua saysthe use of death penalty must be liberal. I thinkthe country is ready for it.

“The debate has been going on for a while inthe public medium and I’ve been monitoring it.

“Most of our people are ready for it. They want it now”.

The Ministersaid he has also received a report onthe Sorcery Act fromthe Constitutional Law Reform Constitution and will apply its recommendations.
