Daru Gets Millions Of Kina Worth Of Water Projects

Daru in Western Province will withness a number of projects worth almost 150 million kina that will improver living standards onthe island township.

 

Followingthe recent launch oftheir beatutification, garbage and sanitation program,the water supply project has taken off withthe recent arrival of building materials.

The island has faced water sanitation problems for many years anPNG Sustainable Development Program has stepped in with fifty-two million kina assistance.

 

The projects that will be implemented will bring employment opportunities and boostthe island’s economic activity.

 

Materials for the new water supply project were delivered tothe island recently. Local contractors have been tasked with carrying outthe projects.

 

PNGSDP boss David Sode saidthe projects are also providing income-earning opportunities inthe informal sector. A large number of people have engaged in collecting rocks and sellingthem to contractors for road maintenance.

 

Apart fromthe water and sewerage projectomore than sixty-two million kina will go towards infrastructure projects in health, education, wharves and an interim sewerage treatment plant.

 

PNGSDP as wellthe provincial government have agreed thatthe water and sewerage project is of extreme importance.

 

 

Mr Gumoi’said illegal connections and leakages have deprived Daru islanders of clean and adequate water supply.

 

The installation ofthe submarine pipe itself and rebuilding ofthe town’s water supply and sewerage system will prevent health problems.

 

The water project is expected to be completed next year.
