PNG’s First Ever Deer Farm

The first ever deer farm is taking shape in Western Province. Kautru villagers in South Fly have trialed with seven deers currently.

The villagers aim to introduce commercial deer farming with support fromthe Ok Tedi Development Foundation.

Kautru Village is 160 kilometres northwest of Daru. It is reachable by a 40 minutes boat ride from a section alongthe Fly River.

Ok Tedi Development Foundation is working withthe local community to establish what could bPNG’s first deer processing facility.

The project began last year, and today deers are being reared by local farmers in a trial deer farm. The aim ofthe project is to commercialise deer farming.

Deer in Western province breed wildly but are not harvested on a large scale.

The village has a population of about 355, and such a project could develop job opportunities for many ofthe locals.

The village survives mainly on fish and subsistence farming. Village chairman Dubki Abuga is confidentthe project will sustainthe community and hopefully bring some basic services closer inthe long term.
