National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate (NFACD) Director, Chief Superintendent Matthew Damaru, has been charged with deprivation of personal liberty and abuse of office.
His arrest is in relation to the arrest of the Supreme and National Court Judge, Justice Sir Bernard Sakora.
Damaru was arrested yesterday afternoon and charged after almost three hours of questioning at the Police Internal Investigation Unit (IIU) in Badili, Port Moresby.
He was taken to the Waigani Police Station and formally charged with the two offences.
Police are still negotiating his bail conditions.
After questioning him at IIU, Damaru told journalists that he believes this is a plot by the Police Commissioner, Gari Baki, against him and staff of the NFACD.
“I think this is [a] personal vendetta by the Commissioner against me and my staff.
“We have been simply doing our job fighting corruption and this action, actually suppressing and further conducting investigation and fighting corruption in this country.
“Regardless of what has happened we will continue to fight because if we don’t who will fight corruption in this country? That’s why we are committed,” Damaru said.
