Commonwealth Youth Games Campaign a Success for Team PNG

by Shane Saroya – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Team PNG returned home Monday after a successful Commonwealth Youth Games campaign in Samoa.

Boxer, Thadius Katua, made history by being the first Papua New Guinean to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The young stars returned yesterday and were warmly welcomes by family and friends as they arrived home to the capital, Port Moresby.

With most of the athletes having the event as their first international meet, the positive results across the board will no doubt act as a stepping stone towards bigger and better things for the group.

Violet Apisah and Matthew Stubbings picked up bronze in the mixed doubles tennis event, and swimmers Savanna Tkatchenko and Ryan Maskelyne gained invaluable experience in the pool.

Miriam Peni, Savanna Tkatchenko, Matthew Stubbings, Violet Apisah and Ryan Maskelyn all flew back to Australia to continue with their individual training and education.
