Provincial jail commanders and regional assistant commissioners in the Correctional Services are planning major activities for the force, come 2017.
The workshop begun this morning and will end on Friday.
Rural lock ups, jail relocation and overcrowding in prisons are some of the challenges which the correctional officers will be discussing.
The Correctional Services is responsible for the detention and the rehabilitation of convicts.
Since its establishment in 1967, provincial jails were set up to perform this role.
However, in recent years, more focus has been given to the detention rather than the rehabilitating.
Steven Pokamis, the Deputy CS Commissioner for Corporate Affairs, says a large sum of the money allocated to CS is used for accommodating and very little is budgeted for rehabilitation programs.
The same challenge is faced in most jails in the country.
This is the first CS Workshop that has brought together all jail commanders including assistance commissioners.
Part of the discussions will be on Budget Review for 2017, and the Rural Lock Up Programs in selected provinces.
