Kokopo Police nabbed a 25-year-old man for being in possession of a large quantity of marijuana.
The suspect admitted to police on Wednesday that the large consignment of marijuana was transported to Kokopo on a commercial flight from Lae. Police say the suspect is one of many marijuana dealers who are scattered all over the East New Britain province.
The 25-year-old man, originally from from Garaina in the Morobe province, was caught by the Kokopo task force team selling these marijuana packs with an estimated street value of K8,000.
He was arrested, charged at the Kokopo police cells. The suspect admitted to police that this wasn’t the first time that the drug had been smuggled in via a commercial flight from Lae.
A pack like this costs K50 on the streets of Kokopo and Rabaul if the sellers are not caught, with much of the product coming from the Highlands region.
Random police checks at Tokua Airport and Rabaul Wharf have forced traffickers to come up with new methods of going through security checks without being caught.
Two weeks ago, two female passengers from Goroka, bound for West New Britain from Lae were caught with cannabis strapped to their bodies. The East New Britain Drug Squad have been trying to curb the widespread use and transportation of marijuana between Lae and the New Guinea Islands region.
Unfortunately marijuana traffickers continue to smuggle in large quantities without being caught.
