Badihagwa Secondary School prepares for start of academic year

by Eric Haurupma – EM TV, Port Moresby

Principal of Badihagwa Secondary School, Maru Bala urged his students and teachers to resume classes as per the scheduled time of Monday, 2 February 2015.

The level ten secondary school has 1,400 students, with a total of 42 teachers teaching in 28 classrooms.

However, the school is under-staffed and so teachers have to teach two subjects.

The school has six grade 12 and five grade 11 classes that make up the upper secondary level, while the rest of the 17 classes cater for lower secondary school students.

After the road block at Hanuabada was cleared for public usage on Monday, students and teachers have been able to commute freely.

Mr Bala, with fellow teachers in their morning devotion yesterday, expressed sympathy and grief for the parents of the deceased and emphasised forgiveness of the policemen allegedly involved in the shooting of the Hanuabada men.

Children’s education is a top priority and students are obliged to arrive on Monday to commence classes.

Due to limited housing, many of the teachers are living outside the school premises, having to travel to school by PMV or school bus.

Maintenance is underway at the school’s grade 12 classroom, with plans for major infrastructure development.

The office of the Prime Minister recently purchased a bus for the school and provided funding, enabling the school to complete the construction of two new classrooms.
