Family Violence Escalates into Colleague Conflict

By Theckla Gunga – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A domestic violence case between a police officer and his wife earlier this week has escalated into fist fights between two units of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.

Last night, two police officers were assaulted by their own colleagues, and the guard house at the Bomana Police Collage outside Port Moresby was rampaged.

When EMTV News arrived at the scene at 10am this morning, there was a confrontation between members of the Dog Unit and the Training College.

Confirmed police reports state that the confrontation followed from last night’s attack where four guards guarding the entrance of the Police College were outnumbered, and the guard house, rampaged by angry members from the Dog Unit.

“Our own police officers from the other side attacked us and destroyed properties that belong to the state,” member of the Training College said.

The officer who spoke off camera said over ten members from the dog unit entered the training gates at 10 O’clock last night and starting destroying office equipment inside the guard house, he said.

Bomana Police Training Commandant, Superintendent Perou N’Dranou, said there were minor confrontations between the two units, mainly at the main entrance and the second gate of the College since Tuesday this week.

“We had confrontation since Tuesday night and because of that, we have some of our men stationed at the main gate just to maintain the situation,” Superintendent N’ Dranou said.

Training Commandant N’Dranou, said following a discussion between the two unit heads, the assault case was given over to NCD police to treat as a criminal case.

However, new developments in the confrontations today have suspended a training program for the new police recruits that were supposed to begin this week.

EMTV News was not able to record an interview with the Head of the Dog Unit however; a report on this incident is expected to be submitted to the Police Commissioner today.

This case has now been handed over to the Gordons Police for further investigations.
