Australia Supports Road Project in Central Bougainville

by Fabian Hakalits – EM TV, Port Moresby

Thanks to Australain government efforts to improve economin development opportunities across Bougainville, commuters in Central Bougainville now have access to trunk roads which in turn will give them access to main road networks.

With the Australian funded project now complete, the project has also given locals an awareness of the importance of road safety.

The PNG-Australia Transport Sector Support Program, in conjunction with the Bougainville Technical Services Department, delivered this initial six kilometres of road from Morgan Junction to Tunuru.

Australian High Commissioner to PNG Deborah Stokes stated “this is part of Australia’s ongoing investment in Bougainville’s transport infrastructure.”

Stokes said transport infrastructure is fundamental to social and economic development, and this will improve safety and reliability of the road networks in Bougainville.

Locals have appreciated this joint partnership saying the road project promotes economic growth opportunities.

Several Australian funded road projects will commence in Bougainville from early 2016, including works from Arawa to Rigu Bridge, and then on to Buin.
