The Anitua Morobe Rugby Union sevens kicked off this weekend at the SCRUM Oval in Lae city with 16 teams taking part in the tournament.
The tournament will run for six weeks with weekly cup finals and winners with cash prizes.
Coming off from a two year absence, this tournament has attracted interests from many rugby players, both veterans and young talents.
Lae’s SCRUM Oval, known as the home of rugby union in Momase region was packed with players and supporters as the Morobe Rugby sevens kicked off yesterday.
This morning saw the finals for this weekend being played, with the winner to walk away with K1,000.
Assistant Tournament Director, Hirake Lokora told EMTV sports that this tournament has brought back more energy into rugby sevens in Morobe.
The tournament was organized with support from corporate sponsors, Anitua Hardware, Seeto Kui and Bemobile Vodafone as refreshers leading up to the Morobe Rugby Union season for 2015.
The interests this year have been great, with more than 16 teams showing their interest to participate.
However, organisers only agreed for 16 teams to take part.
Teams taking part includes Harlequins, Unitech Reds, Defence, Pirates, Telikom City Lights, PC Ravens and Sagothorns.
The tournament will continue for the next five weekends, with weekly cup final winners given K1,000.
