Growths in the Eye are Common in Coastal Areas, says Dr Dulal

A growth in the eye is the main cause of eye problems in most coastal areas like New Ireland Province.

Ophthalmologist, Doctor Sunu Dalal, says that a growth is caused by direct exposure of eyes to the sunlight.

This happens when there are no protective glasses being worn over the eyes.

“New Ireland is one of the coastal areas in Papua New Guinea, where most people depend on sea and land for survival on a daily routine. Even young people are also having growths in their eyes.

“In the ocean there are two reflections; direct from the sky and reflection from the water. So they are exposed to it with wind also.

“People do not wear protective glasses and also hat to protect themselves.”

Cataract is another problem.

Using wood from different types of trees as firewood is also another contributing factor to eye problems.

“Smoke of different wood is also a problem.”

Each individual is responsible for protecting their eyes from harm.

And regular checks to an eye clinic is also important.

“Avoid direct sunlight, don’t not work in the garden when the sun is really hot and regular eye checks is guaranteed.”
