The Countdown to Rio 2016

As Rio de Janeiro gears up for the opening ceremony on Friday (Saturday PNG time), a number of problems have made many question the possible success of the upcoming games.

Despite all that, organisers are confident the infrastructure and the quality of the water at many venues is up to scratch.

The lead up to the games has been gritted by concerns of water pollution, the Zika pandemic and security; some athletes have been training in Rio while others just arriving. Many though are happy with what they have seen thus far.

Rio has been transformed since it won the rights to host the Olympics, new infrastructure has given a face lift after years of decay.

Many of the problems that have reflected Rio in the run up to the games will remain once the athletes, spectators and press have gone.

The Brazilians will have a party and they love their sport and for the second time in two years, Brazil has shown its perfectly capable of organising a global sporting event.
