School Students Participate in ‘Get Into Rugby’ Program

Five schools from Rigo Coast and others from Port Moresby took part in a school rugby festival organised by the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) at Sir John Guise Stadium yesterday.

As part of the ‘Get Into Rugby’ development program these students who were introduced to the program six weeks ago, were given the privilege to play the curtain raiser for the Southern Conference matches of the Export Rugby Championship.

For visiting schools from outside the city where football is dominant, the festival was a learning experience.

Export Rugby Championship Tournament Director, Sailosi Druma, said ‘Get Into Rugby’ aims to increase junior participation as well as introducing the code to those who are not familiar with the basics.

With the involvement from schools inside Port Moresby, they have now advanced into a competition, and that is also the plan for the visiting schools from Rigo coast.

Coming from as far as Hula, Kamali Primary School senior teacher Joseph Bani believes his students’ involvement in the program has broadened their knowledge.

Students who participated not only found it exciting but some are now interested to see what more they can do in the sport.
