PNG Teachers Association Tussle

Teachers in the nation’s capital today rallied outside the PNG Teachers Association (PNGTA) office calling on the removal of the General Secretary, Ugwalubu Mowana.

Mowana is currently under investigation over misappropriation of PNTA funds. Teachers claim that he shouldn’t occupy the office while he is under investigation.

Teachers hung banners in front of the PNGTA head office showing their anger after the Waigani District Court reinstated Mowana, despite there being investigations against him over misappropriations of funds.

A caretaker administrator has been put in place by the industrial union register to take care of PNGTA office while investigations are ongoing.

The teachers want the industrial union registers to remain in office. They are against Mowana’s reinstatement and say they will appeal.

The teachers then locked up the PNGTA office after asking security guards to leave, before police intervened but were unsuccessful.

Teachers are planning to continue their demonstration throughout the week.
