Wewak’s Inter-Primary Carnival Kicks Off

Pacific Games excitement has reached Wewak, with their very own sporting event taking place this week. School kids from all over Wewak township are this week competing in an inter-primary games event, featuring sports such as volleyball, futsal, netball, cricket and touch football.

The competition will wrap up on Friday, with those participating to take part in the official closing ceremony. Six primary school’s from the Wewak area are competing this week: Mongniol Primary School, Kaindi Demonstration School, St Mary’s Primary, St Peter’s Primary, Torot Primary, Kreer Primary and Moam Primary.

Local schools took a break from formal study on 26 July, so those kids who are competing are doing so during their own holiday time.

The defending champions, St Mary’s, are fighting hard to retain the title they won last year. However the competition primarily gives local kids the chance to meet new people and have some fun prior to the start of the Pacific Games.

One of the students taking part this week said that he not only found that he was having fun, but it was also helping to bring harmony to kids of Wewak.

“I’m having so much fun here this week, not only in playing sports but also meeting new friends from our neighbouring schools.

“We believe what we are also doing [our bit] to help stop school fights in Wewak Town.”
