Polye calls on Government to save St John’s Operation in Nation’s Capital

By Jack Lapauve Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

The ceasing of emergency and health services by St John Ambulance has displeased Opposition leader Don Polye.

St John Ambulance recently announced closure of its services following funding woes from the National Health Department.

Mr Polye said the government must intervene with funding to allow St John’s services to continue.

Mr Polye said St John Ambulance provides vital service to the people and that the government, through the Health Department, must ensure continuity of its services.

Mr Polye called on Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, and his Health Minister to intervene immediately to solve the problem.

Chief Commissioner Andrew Kalai told EMTV News that the pro-long approval of a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Health Department has forced operations to stop.

St John submitted an operational budget of K3.4 million but has received K900,000.

St John Chief, Andrew Kalai says, it’s more than a funding matter.

“If only the MOU is approved by the National Government, we should receive funding to support our services”, Kalai said.

The Opposition leader meanwhile called on the national government to put out its plan in addressing the constraints on the country’s economy.
