PNGDF Senior Member blames inadequate training

by Mickey Kavera – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A senior member of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force has blamed inadequate training as the cause for ongoing disciplinary problems within the force’s rank and file.

He says most of the disciplinary problems are caused by new soldiers undergoing three months of military training and this timeframe is not enough to turn them into professional soldiers.

The recent incident involving soldiers and students, has again shed light on the training of new recruits.

The soldier who wants to remain anonymous, described these new recruits as “half-baked soldiers”.

Previously, soldiers underwent six months of military training, but that has since been trimmed down.

This is to meet the national governmen’s target of 5,000 soldiers by 2017.

The soldier says this is a deadly recipe and the PNGDF must return to the drawing board to correct this mistake.

Despite the recent conduct of its soldiers, PNGDF maintains it provides adequate training for its soldiers.
