East Sepik As A Potential Ecotourism Hub of PNG

Eric Haurupma – EM TV, Port Moresby

PNG Ecotourism Director Francis Steven said East Sepik Province is one of the potential ecotourism hubs of Papua New Guinea.

He said East Sepik Province has many cultural artefacts like carvings, traditional haus tambaran (House Man), claypots, and traditional songs that promote the cultural identity of Papua New Guinea.

However, he said the impediment is the lack of coordination and consultation with the national government, Local Level Government District Development Authority and the line agency.

The PNG Ecotourism Services Consultant has been operating for the past 15 years and is aiming to create avenues for local people to access overseas markets.

Having seen the potential of the ecotourism industry in East Sepik Province, he is facilitating to showcase some of the province’s artefacts in Sydney next month.

The event will see local artist’s from the East Sepik Province showcase some its unique cultural heritage as an avenue to sell their products overseas.
