The annual 20 days of activism was launched this morning in the nation’s capital.
Aimed at advocating human rights and addressing social issues, the campaign will run for the next 20 days and end on December 18th.
Speaking to EMTV News, Institute of National Affairs Director, Paul Barker, said the country needs more involvement from the Government to curb human rights abuses.
“NGOs are taking the lead but we need to make sure it is a partnership with the Government, because it will help address these issues more effectively,” Barker said.
The 20 days acts as a reminder to Papua New Guinea’s commitment on preserving human rights. And Barker said the country is failing with increases of abuses like violence against men, women, and children, police brutality and discrimination.
“Human rights issues in the country are growing and we need to have all our institutions involved to address it,” Barker said.
