Simberi Update – Special Purpose Authority

A Special Purpose Authority will be established bythe Central New Ireland local level government to managethe funds fromthe Simberi gold mine for the people.

This was agreed by Parties tothe Simberi Mining Project Memorandum of Agreement last week Friday atthe conclusion ofthe weeklong Simberi MoA review meeting in Kavieng.

Parties includedthe State, New Ireland Provincial GovernmentoCentral New Ireland LLG, Simberi Mining Area Association representingthe landowners and developer – Simberi Gold Company limited.

The Special Purpose Authority is for the Sentral Niu Ailan Local Level Government. Simberi Gold mine is located in this LLG.

The authority will manage funds such as Special Support Grants and ther types of funding fromthe National Government to develop Central New Ireland andthe Tabar Group of Islands.

At presentthese funds are channelled throughthe New Ireland Provincial Government butthere are concernsthese funds are not reachingthe central new Ireland LLG.

The authority will comprise of representatives fromthe LLG, Simberi Mining Area Association and New Ireland Provincial Government.

The final structure ofthe SPA would be a matter for futher discussions betweenthe LLG and relevant State Agencies includingthe Department of Provincial and Local Level Government.
