School Gets New Facilities After 15 Years of Waiting

Kilakila Primary School inthe nation’s capital opened two new facilities this week after 15 long years.

 

Governor Powes Parkop and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko were on hand to officiate.

Beth lLeaderscriticized parents andthe community for showing a lack of support for the school. They were told to take ownership ofthe learning institution for the sake oftheir children’s education and future well-being.

 

Forthe staff and students’of Kilakila primary school, it was a long-awaited moment to havetheir new ablution block and classroom building opened.

 

The projects were delayed for three years because contractors discontinued work. Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko said it was inexcusable for the contractors, andthe school management for failing to completethe projects on time.

 

“I am disgusted inthe waythe school has been treated with no development for the last fifteen years. This is because of poor lLeadersip,” said Tkatchenko.
 

Governor Powes Parkop’shared similar sentiments. He putthe responsibility on parents to supportthe school in every way possible.

 

“You parents have given our back to this school…no parent or guardian was concerned aboutthe school’s state, and not one even trlied to come and helpthe teachers andthe board to help changethe school,” Parkop toldthe parents and guardians.
 

The ablution block and double storey classroom were built at over 460 thousand kina. The new classroom will accommodatethe grade seven students’

 

 “We’ve been teaching in run down classrooms for a long time. We are happy withthe new classroom and we would like if new curriculum materials be given as well,” said Philip Tumbu – Teacher.

 &ldquoInthe old classrooms we had no lights&hellipthe new classrooms have lights and electricity and we can watch classroom broadcast,” Benica Wuki – Grade 7student.
 

Primary schools inthe Moresby South electorate will see a number of ther developments beforethe end ofthe year.

 

Kilakila primary school will now be working toward building a computer laboratory.
