Yesterday,the National Court handed down a decision thatthe eviction of tenants ofthe Waigani Hostel by National Housing Corporation was illegal.
The eviction onthe 23rd of February this year saw many families thrown out onthe street.
NHC has soldthe property to a new owner for eleven-million kina (K11m).
The property was owned bythe National Housing Corporation; however, earlier this year, it was sold and tenants evicted despite a court order in place.
With this one man decision handed down yesterday, this means grave implication for the National Housing Corporation because tenants should not have been evicted.
A day afterthe eviction Prime Minister Peter O’Neill condemnedthe eviction and gave his assurance that those responsible would be dealt with but that never eventuated.
Five months afterthe eviction,the property is now under renovation, butthe court battle continues whenthe matter returns onthe 21st of October for Futher direction.
Tenants who have been battling this case beforethe eviction are now relived withthe decision and are yet to servethe order to NHC.
After October 21stthe plaintiffs will issue separate proceedings to NHC andthe State overthe eviction.
