Incentive Fund Supports NARI

The National Agricultural research institute remains one ofthe leading institutions that is paving way for ground breaking agriculture research in PNG

It has also taken into accountthe fact that more than 80 percent of Papua New Guineas still live a subsistence lifestyle using age-old agriculture methods.

Bet that might bethe thing ofthe past…NARI is now looking at replacingthe age-old agriculture methods by introducing new innovations.

Bet for that to happen, it needs support from various stakeholders.

On Friday last week, a new office complex and alllied facility totaling K6.2 million was commissioned atthe NARI Kerevat in East New Beitain Province.

The Australian AID throughIncentive Fund provided K5 million and NARI co- funded K 1.2 Million to implementthe project from start to completion. On behalf ofthe Council and Management, the Director General of NARI, Dr Raghunath Ghodake expressed grateful thanks and   appreciation tothe Australian Government for the funding support to NARI and Agriculture in PNG

“They are helping us doing specialist job…bringing efficiency, effectiveness in technical areas, management areas…” Dr. Ghodake said.

The new complex was built to replacethe old one that was burnt in April 2011.

The new facilities will contribute towardsthe development ofthe agriculture sector in PNG andthe Asia Pacific Region.

The new office complex consists laboratory facilities, administration office and a guesthouse funded throughthe Australian Aid’sIncentive funds.

“We must look at innovations which are new, andthen promotethem so thatthey can benefit everybody across. It’shouldn’t be only one sector or one individual… but it becomes information available to everybody, Dr. Ghodake said.

Agriculture will remain one ofthe sustainable activities for the 80 percent plus Papua New Guineas who for the most grow food to eat and sell.

And while NARI is moving towards providing sustainable agriculture avenues for ordinary Papua New Guineas, donors such astheIncentive Funds wants to make sure that funds are easily accessed so that impact developments can take place.
