United Church Partners With Government To Grow SME Sector

A memorandum of understanding betweenthe United Church andthe government now paves way for more business training for rural communities inthe East Papua region.

 

The signing took place overthe weekend in Fife Bey inthe Suau local level government inthe Milne Bey Province.

During this occasion a total of 152 men, women and youths graduated with certificates on how to start and manage a business.

 

The Fife Bey inthe Suau LLG is a pastoral station for the United Church. A two hour boat trip will take you to this beatutiful place.

 

The church has partnered withthe provincial government to develop this remote post. Besides education, it has now come on board to assist government growthe SME’sector in its various pastoral stations inthe Central and Milne Bey Provinces.

 

“The government recognises thatthe United Church – East Central Papua Region, isthe first denomination inthe country that has recognisedthe need to educate its members to capacitatethem under its stewardship program so thatthey can be equal players inthe development ofthe country,” Peter Piawu – SBeC Business Manager.
 

Forthe islanders who depend on fishing and gardening,they will now have formal business education. The participants were told to think outside ofthe box.

 

This followsthe inaugural SME’summit in Madang, where Commerce and TradeIndustry Minister Richard Maru’spoke ofthe need to growthe SME’sector in PNG

 

The United Church wants to empower its members in its respective pastoral stations inthe East Papua region andthe surrounding communities.
