Prime Minister on Reviewing of Foreign Consultancy

PNG Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill, today reinforced a recent announcement that positions in government departments held by expatriate employees, or consultants, are under review, and many will come to an end on the 31st of December 2015.

Prime Minister O’Neill recently made mention in Parliament, that in an effort to safeguard state secrets, the government had decided to end the practice of having foreign advisors and consultants engaged in national state agencies and government departments.

“What we have control over here, is what happens in government departments. We are reviewing all positions held by expatriate employees, or consultant employees, within the public service, and we will put an end to many of the consultancy agreements by 31st December 2015.

“By first of January (2016), we will only employ people who are needed in those departments, who are going to contribute meaningfully. Where we lack the skills or the ability, or where there is shortage of a skill that we require. But all in all, I can tell you that is where we are heading to. That Papua New Guineans to step up and do the job that they are required to do for our country,” Mr O’Neill told listeners of the FM100 Talkback Show, the premier talkback program on the state-owned radio station.
