SHP Women AusAID Assists Nine SHP Communities

The Australian government has given more than half a million kina to assist health and education in nine Southern Highlands Province communities.

The grants come underthe’Strongim Pipol’Strongim Nesen program and are specifically to empower women. The country’s rural populace is demanding better access to clean water and sanitation, new classrooms and aid posts amongst thers.

 

The Head of AusAID in PNG Stuart Schaefer said women inthe Southern Highlands Province not only demand for these services butthey also want training to supporttheir families. Mr. Schaefer saidthe people are investing inthese following projects by contributing towards 10 per cent ofthe total costs.

 

The Gesege Village Development Committee received over K70, 000.00 for the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Project inthe Nipa-Kutubu District.The Komoli Community Health Post cost over K60, 000.00 to build a permanent aid-post building inthe Imbonggu District andthe Southern Highlands Womenrsquo;s Association for Peace and Development received over K54, 000.00 to educatetheir women and girls on farming techniques and income generating opportunities.

 

The SPSN grants are unique because provincial and district government officers work jointly with local community workers and SPSN staff at all stages of grant development and implementation.

 

ther grant recipients inthe Southern Highlands are:

  • The Catholic Diocese of Mendi which received K72, 000.00 for the Sugu Water Supply Project in Kagua-Erave District.
  • The Longa Kape Elementary School which will build a permanent elementary classroom with its K72, 175.00 grant.
  • The Nipa Central Circuit Fellowship Group fromthe Nipa-Kutubu District received K64, 772.00 to invest in a sewing and cooking project.
  • The Rawame Pogera Community Group who received K71, 345.00 to carry our renovation totheir village Aid Post.
The groups receivedtheir grants in a ceremony atthe Mendi Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Mendi attended by SPSN team and Southern Highlands Administrator, Ungia Kembo.
