Digicel Cup General Manager Hubert Warupi confirmed that what happened in round 8 ofthe Digicel Cup competition was a sad day andthe competition has suffered tremendously from negative reports.
The Judiciary has since made decisions against 11 eleven Digicel Cup players for their part in ugly offences on field. The appllied sanctions correspond to two incidents inthe same match which has broughtthe game into disrepute.
Tigers Atte Bena Wabo, George Benson and Isapeas Philip Kumiye and Junior Belo have 12 weeks match suspension each for their heavy handed roles inthe brawl. Tigers Mogi Wei Junior, Willie Minoga and Isapeas Lawrence Tuu have 8 weeks match suspension while Tigers Charlie Phillip, Rolly Matalau and Isapeas Jason Koivi and Pipi Kilori have each 4 weeks match suspensions.
The players have been sanctioned for the roles at different levels duringthe fightoeffective immediately and will miss out onthe remainder ofthe 2013 Digicel Cup season proper.
The Gulf Isapea and Snax Tigers franchise have also been fined K20, 000.00 each for not displaying sufficient measures from team officials and management to mitigatethe escalating violence and aggression shown on field.
ThPNGNRL has seen fit to deductthe competition points fromthe Tigers as a result ofthe match being called off atthe 75th minute whereinthe player’s violence incited spectators to disruptthe match from continuing.
Commenting onthe sanctionsPNGNRL General Manager, Hubert Warupi stated that it was necessary forPNG RL to installthe sanctions to protectthe integrity ofthe game.
