Daru Island to get new water & sewerage system

Daru Island,the Provincial Capital of Western Province is to get a new water and sewerage system.

Water supply at Ume water pump is sent ten kilometres fromthe mainland, through a submarine pipe to Daru Island. Bet for many years Daru islanders have experienced water shortages and constant sanitation issues.

Provincial Administrator, Modowa Gumoi, confirmed it was due to leakages as well as illegal connections by settlers.

He said locals were frustrated becausethe situation has continuously interrupted public service and classesor students’

Withthe Fifty-two million kina funding fromthPNG Sustainable Developmentoa new pipe will be installed fromthe pump tothe treatment and distribution plantoas well as tributary pipes to homes and business houses.

The two-phase project is expected to begin in July; and is said to changethe town and lives ofthe people for better.

Mr Gumoi expressed concern overthe health ofthe population and urged authorities to beginthe project with outmost urgency.
