Maka Community School inthe Lake Murray District of Western Province was re-opened recently, after being closed for two decades.
Its new lease on life was made possible under an expansion program bythPNG Sustainable Development Program.
There was cause for celebration for the Maka people asthey welcomed officials fromthPNG Sustainable Development Program totheir remote village.
Their 51-year old community school was to be re-opened after it’shut down for twenty years because it lacked teachers and sufficient school infrastructure.
Community leader Ralph Sigap gave his people’s commitment tPNGSDP to assist in building new classrooms and teachers’ accommodation.
Following formal speeches ribbons were cut to officially re-openthe school.
Two hundred and sixty students’enrolled this year with two teachers and two teaching assistants. New classrooms will be built; existing facilities renovated and new teachers’ houses will be erected to accommodate two more teachers.
The project is valued at five hundred thousand kina. It will come frofPNG DP’s 6.9 million kina Lake Murray Socio-economic Development Hub project.
Maka Community School is run bythe Seventh DayAdventist Church, and covers communities aroundthe lake.
