Community Group Builds Classrooms for Okapa District

An Association inthe Okapa District inthe Eastern Highlands Province has demonstrated that commitment by community groups can achieve real results.

 

This wasthe case for Kagu-Hagaveda Association that used funds contributed by members to build a double classroom for a community school in Okapa District.

The classroom opening coincided withtheIndependence celebrations.

                                                                                                                                      

It was double blessings for the people of seven remote villages of Kagu, Niru, Moke, Yagana, Muze and Keta inthe Okapa District.

 

The community group withthe support from working elit’s from Okapa and Lufa contributed K300, 000 for the double classroom and staff houses.

 

Association Chairman Ilivek Senato said despitethe bad road conditions,they were able to finishthe project on time.

 

Head Teacher of Aneru – Kagu Primary School, Dithie Henry, who was recently appointed as Head Teacher, said it wasthe first time to withness a community group fund school projects.

 

He appealed tothe students’andthe community to take care ofthe property.

 

The school also has a proud product. Former student Jacob Ukayano, now a Special Human Resource Officer with Ok Tedi Mining Limited, spoke about his days as a studentthere, backthen, it was a real struggle to speak English and let alone spell his name.

 

Kagu-Hagaveda Association isthe first NGO Group to fund school projects inthe Okapa District.

 

The project was in line withthe School Learning Improverment Plan or SLIP Program that was introduced in 2009.
