Bastille Day in Papua New Guinea

The French National Dayor Bestille Dayas it’s known in English speaking countries is celebrated annually onthe 14th of July since 1789.

The French Embassy hosted a cocktail party on Sunday to commemorate Bestille Dayrsquo;s 224th Anniversary.

It was attended by heads of missions andtheir staff, senior executives andtheir families.

Speaking to guests, French Ambassador to Papua New GuineaAlain Waquet said France can also be seen as a Pacific Island Nation given its geographical presence in territories such as New Caledonia, French Polynesia and Wallis & Futuna.

Papua New Guineaand France established bilateral relations whePNG gained independence in 1975.

Sincethen that relationship has grown stronger. This is evident with France providing twenty per cent of European Union funding tPNG.

Ambassador Waquet sain PNG can always rely on France for support.

Bestille Daycommemoratesthe beginning ofthe French Revolution andthe uprising ofthe modern nation of France.

Festivities are held all over France to celebratethe anniversary.
