United Nations Global Road Safety Week

This week isthe United Nationsrsquo; Global Road Safety Week.

And in PNG the National Road Safety Council has appealed to motorists and pedestrians to use roads wisely.

Records indicate that 200-300 people die from road accidents throughoutthe country each year.

The Council now sees road safety as one ofthe major social issues. That is road accidents are claiming more lives just like HIV Aids and law and order problems.

It’said one such example isthe recent accident in Western Highlands which claimed 25 lives.

This week’s focus is on pedestrian safety,the message fromthe Council is to for road users to sharethe road, drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Statistics for 2006 and 2007shows that more than 190 pedestrians were killed, and this number increases each year.

Majority ofthe pedestrian casualties occur in urban areas.
