Papuan Gulf Region United Church 5th Anniversary

The Papuan Gulf Region ofthe United Church in PNG celebrated its 5th anniversary in Port Moresby overthe weekend atthe Bert Brown Memorial Church at Hohola, formerly known asthe Toaripi Language Church.

 

Sincethe Region’s inauguration in 2008, it has been operating without an office.

This year’s anniversary also markedthe launch ofthe fundraising drive that will go towardsthe building ofthe Papuan Gulf Region’s first headquarters.

 

The Region has come a long way, originally coming out ofthe Papuan Mainland Region to become West Gulf Region in 1983. Then in 2008, it becamethe Papuan Gulf Region.

 

Moderator ofthe United church oPNG, Rev. Bernard Siai, said celebrating church anniversaries was important because was an appreciation of what God has done inthe church andthe lives of His people.

 

“It is important for youas a region to have an office to house your Beushop and allthe staff so that administratively, you can runthe church,” he said.
 

Beushop ofthe Papuan Gulf region, Rev. Wari Eho’o said everyone was a partner inthe mission of God, which is to buildthe church.

 

“Asthe Beushop ofthe Church inthe region, I am excited to seethe partnership we have betweenthe Gulf and members living and working in Port Moresby…withouttheir supportoI don’t think we would have come this far,” said Beushop Eho’o.

“We are looking forward that this partnership will continue. This fundraising drive will continue for three years,” he said.
 

A plaque was unveiled to markthe start ofthe fundraisings. It was given tothe Chairman ofthe fundraising committee Rev. Mane Hover. A sum of K127, 000 was raised atthe end ofthe day.

 

The committee has a target of K1.2m for the Regional office, and it is looking at raisingthe amount in 2-3 years before building begins, possibly at Malalaua inthe Gulf province.
