YWCA destined for greater heights

At a time of high rentals and heightened needs for women advancementoone organization has beenthe supporting shoulder.

It’sthe Young Womenrsquo;s Christian Association or YWCA. Overthe years it has operated quietly at a round corner in Port Moresby, but that’s about to change.

Established in Novermber 1962, YWCA has gone through some uphill battle in terms of funding but never havethey shuttheir doors to those in need for up to 50 years in operation.

With plans of expanding and developing some untouched land behindtheir two mile property, General Secretary ofthe YWCA Kila Amini says despitethe little fundingthey receivethe Association is destined for greater heights.

The Kokoda hall, used for workshops is in dire need of repair and maintenance work; along with a child care centre which is soon to open for 2013.

A sewing and arts and craft room is one ther way thatthe YWCA teaches and earns money as well.

This common room is home to eighty plus women and with a timely boost from a private accounting firm GABe, YWCA can now look forward to what lies ahead.

GABe was established in 2010 from just one person to nineteen stuff in which six ofthem are managerial positions held by three women including Lisa Resson Costigan, Senior Manager and David Angip, Supervisor.

The YWCA is a multi-run organisation that aims to help women’s needs and help advance intheir profession while providing accommodation at a low cost.
