The National Youth Commission will change its status to an authority in 2014. Commissioner, Norit Luio, said throughthe authority,they will establish offices in each province,then reach out to youths inthe LLGs and districts.
Mr. Luio madethe announcement in Wabag town when he officially launchedthe 5 Year Enga Provincial Youth Development Plan.
Hundreds, including youths fromthe 5 districts, gthered for the launching in Wabag town.
Mr. Luio saidthe commission will become an authority next year in order to encompass youth concerns atthe district and LLG levels.
He urgedthe Enga Provincial Government to establish a youth development office that will get youths involved in business and ther activities that makethem self-reliant.
He said that ofthe over 70 thousand youths who graduate with formal education every year, over 30 thousand are left to fend for themselves. He said many resort to alcohol and drug abuse and cause disharmony intheir communities. The office he said is a place for this vulnerable group to take refuge.
Followingthe launch, UNFPA presented ITequipment tothe churches and NGOs in Wabag. These arethe institutions that currently assist youths inthe province, awaitingthe establishment of a youth centre for the province.
The National Youth Commission, established in 2007, is also working on constructing its head office inthe nation’s capital. So far it has launched youth plans for 18 provinces.
Mr. Luio said oncethe headquarters is furnished in March of 2014,the youth development policy will be effectively rolled out.
