6.7 magnitude Earthquake Reports No Damage

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7struck Papua New Guinea specifically Western Solomon Sea, near Finshaffen, Morobe Province.

ThPNG Geophysical Observatory reported no immediate damage and no regional tsunami alert.

The earthquake&#39’s epicenter was relatively deep and way offshore so it was unlikely to have caused major problems.

The quake struck Monday morning about 320 kilometers north of Port Moresby and was centered about 84 kilometers below sea level.

The earthquake occurred as a result ofthe sinking ofthe Solomon Plate beneaththe South Besmarck Plate.

Papua New Guineais located along what is calledthe “Ring of Fire” – an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones that stretches aroundthe Pacific Rim. It&#39’s where most ofthe world&#39’s seismic activity occurs.
