A community empowerment project on HIV/AIDS in Port Moresby has concluded after 6 months of awareness.
The conclusion of the Moale Gabuna HIV/AIDS and STI’s Project saw participants awarded with certificates this week.
The project operates within the HIV/AIDS Awareness Priority of the district, with plans to empower two hundred thousand youth in twelve settlements in the Moresby North West electorate.
Health and HIV/AIDS Minister and Member for Moresby North-West, Michael Malabag, assisted the project with over three hundred thousand kina.
As the country’s youth population increases, the need for HIV/AIDS education, particularly within settlements, is important in minimizing the spread of HIV and maintaining a safe generation.
The Moale Gabuna Project has successfully trained 142 participants, a majority of them youths, who were recognized with certificates upon training completion.
The skills and knowledge gained from this project has empowered these youths to spread awareness with their peers and exercise safer sexual practices. The Project brought people from all walks of life to understand HIV and preventive methods against the disease.
Representing the Health and HIV/AIDS Minister was Electoral Project Officer, Angus Ali. He said the Minister assisted wisely, especially with youth involved in such projects.
The funds and project were guided by the Department of Implementation and Rural Development to ensure that the money was well spent and completed on time.
Project Manager Zebedee Pang said the main challenge of the project was the lack of proper knowledge and misguided assumptions on the burdens of HIV.
However, with the conclusion of the project, the participants can now practise safer methods to avoid the transmission of HIV.
