Lae Mum With Two Toddlers Escape Knife Wielding Attacker

The wife of a Lae based Lawyer has spoken out about her ordeal with a knife wielding youth.

Zillar Laina-Mambei (pictured) had her bag violently snatched at boundary road when she was on her way to church with her toddlers.

Today, she spoke of how she protected herself and both her sons from her drunken attacker.

Sitting outside her home Zillah Laina- Mambei recalls an incident along the boundary road area that has traumatized her toddlers.

“He came had the knife raised above his head when he came for us,” she says.

Her two sons, three-year-old Paul and five year old Aston were on their way to church when a youth violently snatched Zilllah’s handbag at the Maiba junction.

“He got the bag and ran through a gate and up the hill, a lady later shut the gate behind him,” says Zillah.

Zillah and her boys were easy targets, for someone looking for an opportunity to rob pedestrians, especially women, girls and children walking alone.

It took less than a minute for the drunken youth to approach the mother and children at the junction, where he snatched the handbag and ran up a hill at Naweab block.

It has been difficult to clamp down on suspects who are known to the community and they are either protected by people or feared in the community.

Yesterday, we talked to Wata Kuia and his family. Wata, a father of 5, dodged a bullet at close range, aimed at his head from someone he knew.

He says he knows who the shooter was.

Residents have told EMTV that more than five people are either robbed or harassed on the Maiba corner every week.

Some have been stabbed and shot at, people now want normalcy to walk freely to Eriku for shopping and work without constantly looking over their shoulders.
