PNG Police Commissioner on Social Media

By Eric Haurupma – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Papua New Guinea Police Commissioner, Gary Baki, has brushed aside comments about students being killed through information circulated on social media, saying it is totally false.

He said it is important that the country is informed.

Baki called on anyone that is on social media to be very careful on what they say, as that can result in inciting unrest.

Meanwhile, Baki confirmed an incident happened today resulting in police discharging teargas and opening fire at UPNG students.

He said that about 23 students were injured during the incident, of which four were severely injured and are hospitalised.

Baki is tasking Assistant Commissioner of Crimes, Victor Isouve, to investigate the incident.

However, he said police will investigate the outcome of those injured and give a confirmed report on whether the injuries where from a firearm or teargas.

Meanwhile, he is awaiting medical reports to confirm the details of the injuries sustained.
