PNGRFL Chairman: Meninga’s Contract Not Breached

by Jaylee Sapias – EM TV Sports, Port Moresby

Former PNG Kumuls Coach, Mal Meninga, did not breach his contract with PNGRFL when he resigned last week, PNGRFL Chairman Sandis Tsaka said.

Meninga, who recently announced his move to the Australian Kangaroos as Head Coach was only three years into his contract, which was supposed to end following the 2017 World Cup.

Tsaka told EMTV Sports today, Meninga was exercising his rights and that lawyers were consulted before Meninga’s move was finalised.

While the PNGRFL board has said plans to recruit a new Coach is set for January next year, Sports Minister, Justin Tkatchenko, and PNG Rugby League CEO, Bob Cuttmore, have both tipped PNG Hunters Coach, Michael Marum, for the Kumuls top job as it is time a Papua New Guinean is given this role.

Tsaka has wished Meninga all the best with his new contract and said he will widen his net for recruitment of the new PNG Kumuls Coach.
