The policeman who shot 22 year-old, Late Moana Pisimi, in the morning of January 1st this year has been sentenced to 30 years of imprisonment.
National Court Judge Justice, Fraser Pitpit, made the decision today at the Lae National Courts.
Jack Baria was sentenced for 30 years imprisonment minus the time he was held in custody at Lae’s Buimo jail.
The National Court in Lae sentenced policeman, Jack Baria, to a 30-year imprisonment for the murder of 22-year-old Moana Pisimi, in the early morning of January 1st this year.
After several adjournments, the sentencing was handed down today by National Court Judge, Justice Fraser Pitpit.
According to the judge’s ruling, evidence collected from a forensic investigation and medical reports from an autopsy of the deceased had proven the convicted had caused grievous bodily harm.
In September this year, the National Court found Jack Baria guilty of murder.
The court found that Pisimi died of a shot to the back of her head.
The policeman has served 22 years in the royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary.
His 30-year imprisonment excludes the three months served in custody at Lae’s Buimo Jail.
This case has raised many questions from the public about the credibility and trustworthiness of the police force in keeping communities safe and free from trouble.
