New App to Help Road Engineers

by Quinton Alomp – EM TV, Port Moresby

A new visual application launched today will allow the Works department and its stakeholders to assess road conditions on screen.

The road viewer application was produced after Cardno, an international development partner, surveyed over 6,000 kilometres of national roads around the country.

It will allow road engineers to assess road conditions on screen, without actually visiting the site.

The new technology will allow the Works department asset management and design branch, to evaluate road conditions around the country.

The application can be installed on a computer, allowing users to simply click on an interactive map of the country, and the preferred road, to watch a detailed video of the pavement condition, drainage, potholes and traffic volume of that section of the road.

It is believed that the App will allow development partners, engineers and policy makers to see the present quality and condition of the road and to make decisions on where to improve.

The project was carried out by Cardno within eighteen months, with a K3 million funding from the Australian government.

This application was the first in PNG with information readily available in video format.
