Rabaul Kokopo Road Woes

By Edwin Fidelis – EM TV, Kokopo

Sections of the road between Kokopo and Rabaul town continue to deteriorate due to heavy downpour.

For commuters travelling between Kokopo and Rabaul, the ride is not always comfortable.

This is due to the continuous heavy downpour of rain in June, in East New Britain Province.

Heavy torrential rain flush debris and silt downhill, onto the road, between Raluana and Raburua Village, just a few kilometres out of Kokopo town.

The silt that remained after the rain continued to accumulate at the roadside, creating dust pollution and narrowing the road.

This has become a worry for travellers, using the road between Kokopo and Rabaul.

Roads are an important infrastructure for the East New Britain people, especially to be used for swift evacuation in times of disaster.

The East New Britain people, on numerous occasions, have raised concerns to the Provincial Government over the steady deterioration of the roads,  not only between Kokopo and Rabaul, but others in the Province as well.

While efforts have been put into upgrading the Kokopo-Rabaul road to make it usable, it hasn’t helped in any big way.

If it rains again tonight, road maintenance will have to start over again tomorrow.
