Polye Raises Concerns on Highlands Highway

by Stanley Ove Jr – EM TV, Port Moresby

Opposition Leader, Don Polye, has raised concerns on the deteriorating state of major road connections along the Highlands Highway.

Mr Polye is now proposing concrete slabs to replace the bitumen, which Mr Polye described as not strong enough to last for over six months.

The Highlands Highway is a 700 kilometre stretch of road that covers majority of the Highlands region including the Momase Region (Morobe, Madang and Sepik Provinces).

It has been the national government’s burden to keep the road up to standard as it’s a vital economic connection for the country, that caters for over a quarter of the country’s population.

Every year the government allocates approximately K1 billion to cater for all major highways and road upgrades in the country.

Mr Polye said the government must not concentrate on roads in the city; rather put funds direct to fix the Highlands Highway and other major highways in the country.
