Japan will continue to foster a strategic partnership for gender equality and empowerment with Papua New Guinea and the United States of America.

Japan Ambassador to PNG, Morio Matsumoto announced this today at a contract agreement signing with Bougainville non-government organisation, Leitana Nehan Women’s Development Agency (LNWDA). The agreement is for the construction of a human resource development resource centre.

The ceremony was also an opportunity for Ambassador Matsumoto to announce the government of Japan’s initiative to create ‘a society where Women’shine’ and provide incentives for corporations that work hard for women’s success.

Ambassador Matsumoto said Leitana Nehan Women’s Development Agency was recognised for its continuous work on women peace-building initiatives since after the Bougainville Crisis.

The United States is honoured to partner with Japan to help Leitana Nehan Women’s Development Agency.

US Ambassador to PNG, Walter North said LNWDA’s hard work highlights the way forward to a brighter future in which women can shine.

Helen Hakena, LNDWA’s Director, was speechless at today’s ceremony.

She thanked the government of Japan for realising their hard work and commitment in operating in a conflict setting like Bougainville for over 21 years now.

Meanwhile, both governments have pledged working together to promote gender equality and empower women in Papua New Guinea.
