This comes after their tuition fee which is normally paid by their provincial government, was not paid into the UPNG tuition fee account.
The dilemma was announced in parliament by the Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru.
Governor Naru raised this concern to the Minister for Higher Education, Research Science and Technology, David Arore, during parliament sitting today.
He requested that the minister send a circular from his office to UPNG administration and ask for leniency since the Education account is still closed.
In response, Minister Arora said Universities are like any other institution; they need money for operational costs.
He said the peak period for the department is from November to February and asked the speaker if accounts for the education sector can remain open to avoid such cases.
He then assured the governor that he will speak to the UPNG registrar on the matter.
In a circular released by UPNG’s registrar last month, the students are required to pay the full fee up front before they can be given accommodation.
In this case, the students were denied accommodation because the school is yet to receive money from the provincial government
The Morobe provincial government has been paying tuition fees for its tertiary students since 1999.
